Alternatives to PartsBox

There is no single replacement for PartsBox, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What there is: products that beat it on one specific thing. Each section below answers a different reason for switching, so start with the reason that applies to you.

For context, PartsBox is a bom & inventory product. Lot-level component traceability for hardware teams that have to prove it. Its weakest points, in our reading, are: anyone needing time-phased planning; the purchasing logic is demand-and-stock, not demand-and-dates, and batch and recipe manufacturers. this is entirely electronics-shaped.

If you are switching for: lower cost

Costs meaningfully less to get the same job done.

  • Excellent free parts-and-BOM control for hardware shops, not a planning engine.

    BOM & inventoryOpen source

Free plan; no published paid price

    • Electronics and hardware shops that need rigorous part, stock-location and BOM control
    • Technical owners who want an MIT license and a real REST API with no vendor in the middle
    • Labs and prototype shops tracking serialized units and test results

InvenTree covers similar ground for free if you self-host, but has no distributor price aggregation and we could not verify its lot handling.

  • Desktop-first parts and BOM control that works without an internet connection.

    BOM & inventoryProprietary on-premise

    From $15/mo · $50/mo useful

    • Hardware teams who want their parts database on their own machine rather than someone else's server
    • Shops working somewhere with unreliable internet. It is offline-first by design
    • Small teams benefiting from flat pricing instead of per-seat billing

BOMIST publishes prices from $15 a month and runs as an offline-first desktop app, which suits teams that would rather not depend on a hosted service.

If you are switching for: open source or self-hostable

You can run it yourself and keep the data on your own terms.

  • Build-oriented hardware MRP with unusual capacity-based pricing.

    BOM & inventoryProprietary SaaS

    From $187/mo

    • Hardware companies running a small number of larger builds
    • Teams needing warehouses, transfers and safety stock alongside engineering BOMs
    • Shops that want a thirty-day trial to test with real data before committing

Compared on Aligni's page, where we wrote: "Both serve electronics teams. PartsBox documents lot traceability forward into built devices, where Aligni records lot codes on inventory units and what each build consumed. Aligni publishes hierarchical BOM cost roll-up that PartsBox does not."

Before you switch anything

  • · Check the export path out of your current system before you commit to the next one.
  • · Price the new system for your real team size and the modules you need, not the headline tier.
  • · Migration is usually the expensive part, and almost nobody budgets for it.
