Alternatives to InvenTree

There is no single replacement for InvenTree, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What there is: products that beat it on one specific thing. Each section below answers a different reason for switching, so start with the reason that applies to you.

For context, InvenTree is a bom & inventory product. Excellent free parts-and-BOM control for hardware shops, not a planning engine. Its weakest points, in our reading, are: anyone who came looking for mrp, build orders are execution, not planning, and shops with nobody to run a server.

If you are switching for: lower cost

Costs meaningfully less to get the same job done.

  • Lot-level component traceability for hardware teams that have to prove it.

    BOM & inventoryProprietary SaaS

    Free plan · From €49/mo

    • Regulated hardware teams that must trace a component lot into a shipped device
    • Shops buying against distributor pricing who want BOM costing before committing
    • Labs handling non-standard units, wire by length, paste by weight

Both target electronics inventory and BOM control; InvenTree is free and self-hosted where PartsBox is hosted, with a free single-user plan and paid tiers from 49EUR a month, and the trade is your server time against their uptime.

If you are switching for: open source or self-hostable

You can run it yourself and keep the data on your own terms.

If you are switching for: simpler for makers

Less to set up and less to learn for a very small shop.

  • The simplest free way to know what components you have and where.

    BOM & inventoryOpen source

Free plan; no published paid price

    • Hobbyists and small electronics shops who mainly need to find the part they already own
    • Anyone wanting a free, Docker-installable component catalog with datasheets attached
    • Teams that want an API over their parts list without paying for one

Part-DB is the lighter of the two open-source electronics options, closer to a catalog with BOM support, where InvenTree adds a full build-order workflow.

  • The only serious print-farm ERP we found, with gram-level material costing.

    Manufacturing ERPSource available

    Free plan · From $0/mo

    • 3D print farms that need filament costed per gram rather than per spool
    • Print shops wanting to self-host at zero license cost and upgrade later without migrating
    • Operators who prefer a $2,500 perpetual license to an indefinite subscription

Compared on FilaOps's page, where we wrote: "InvenTree is MIT-licensed with no use restrictions at all, but knows nothing about printers or filament weight. You would be building the additive parts yourself."

Before you switch anything

  • · Check the export path out of your current system before you commit to the next one.
  • · Price the new system for your real team size and the modules you need, not the headline tier.
  • · Migration is usually the expensive part, and almost nobody budgets for it.
