FilaOps

by BLB 3D Printing

Manufacturing ERPSource available✓ Verified

A 3D-print-farm ERP built by a print shop, covering inventory, multi-level BOMs, MRP, work orders, printer integration and a general ledger, under the Business Source License, which is source available rather than open source.

Why it is classified this way

We call this a Manufacturing ERP product. A broad business system (accounting, sales, purchasing) with a substantial manufacturing or planning module attached.

It is not labeled Full MRP because we have not verified that it explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials; and uses lead times or required dates. That is a statement about the evidence we found, not a claim that the product is weak, see the capability table and the sources below.

The six Full MRP tests, and how FilaOps does on each (4 of 6)
  1. YesIt represents a bill of materials, recipe, or formula.Evidence: filaops.blb3dprinting.com(opens in a new tab)
  2. YesIt accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule.Evidence: blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)
  3. YesIt nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming.Evidence: github.com › Filaops(opens in a new tab); blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)
  4. UnknownIt explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials. Not established. No evidence found yet.
  5. PartialIt uses lead times or required dates. Not established. Only partly shown: the evidence covers some of this but not all of it, so the test is not established.
  6. YesIt produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations.Evidence: blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab); filaops.blb3dprinting.com(opens in a new tab)

These rules are applied identically to every product and enforced at build time, a record cannot be published as Full MRP unless all six pass with a source attached. Read the methodology.

Best for

  • 3D print farms that need filament costed per gram rather than per spool
  • Print shops wanting to self-host at zero license cost and upgrade later without migrating
  • Operators who prefer a $2,500 perpetual license to an indefinite subscription

Not a fit when

  • Anyone outside additive manufacturing. The whole design assumes printers
  • Shops that need a genuine open-source license for policy reasons; BSL is not one
  • Non-technical owners, since every tier is self-hosted

CapabilityFindingWhat we found
Accepts dated demandYou can tell it what is due and when, sales orders with dates, a forecast, or a production schedule.YesThe MRP run "Gathers all open sales orders and open production orders within your planning horizon", which defaults to 30 days, so demand is dated. The Buy List shows each component's need-by date as the earliest due date among the orders using it.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)Question this
Nets against stock on handIt subtracts what you already have before telling you to buy more.YesThe vendor states: "- Demand calculation from sales orders and production Supply netting against on-hand inventory Planned order generation for shortages" From the project's README. The MRP user guide confirms demand is dated within a planning horizon and that open purchase orders are subtracted as incoming supply, with safety stock added back. Checked 2026-09-18.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: github.com › Filaops(opens in a new tab); blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)Question this
Counts incoming ordersIt knows about purchase orders and production orders already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice.YesThe shortage calculation "Subtracts quantities already on open purchase orders (draft, ordered, or partially received)", so stock already ordered is not ordered twice. Open production orders count as demand for their components, not as supply of the parent item.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)Question this
Uses lead timesIt works backwards from when you need something to when you must order or start it, using supplier and production lead times.PartialFrom the project's source code: planned orders are due on a fixed date two weeks out, "due_date = date.today() + timedelta(days=14) # Default 2 weeks", and the item's lead time only sets the start date back from that. Working back from the date the demand is actually needed happens only for sub-assemblies, behind a setting that is off by default, so the offset is not anchored to real need dates.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: raw.githubusercontent.com › Mrp.py(opens in a new tab); blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab)Question this
Produces dated buy/make suggestionsThe output is an actionable list with dates, order this much by this date, start this batch on this date.YesThe Buy List gives a suggested quantity for each component with a need-by date, the "Earliest due date among the open orders consuming this component". Planned orders from the full MRP run carry due and start dates, but that run is API-only for now and its dates use the fixed two-week horizon described under lead-time offsetting. "Advanced MRP & capacity planning" is reserved for PRO.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: blb3dprinting.github.io › Mrp(opens in a new tab); filaops.blb3dprinting.com(opens in a new tab)Question this

About the licence

Business Source License 1.1, described by the vendor as "free for non-competing use". The LICENSE file sets "Change Date: December 5, 2029" and a change license of Apache 2.0; each version converts on that date or four years after it is first published, whichever comes first. Until then the Additional Use Grant allows production use except a competing commercial SaaS offering. BSL is source available, not open source: you can read and run the code, but the license restricts competing use. We will not print the words "open source" for a BSL product, even though the vendor's own materials use them.

Editorial notes and cautions

Things we would want a friend to know before buying.

  • The vendor describes FilaOps as open source. It is licensed under BSL 1.1, which restricts competing use and is not an OSI-approved open-source license. We classify it as source available. That is not a criticism of the product. It is a fact you need before you build a business on it.
  • Community includes MRP and multi-level BOMs, which is genuinely generous. The full MRP run that creates planned orders is API-only for now, and planned-order dates sit on a fixed two-week horizon rather than working back from when demand is due. Confirm what "advanced" adds before assuming you need PRO.
  • This is a small project from a single shop. Judge the maintainer risk accordingly, and note that the perpetual offline license is a reasonable hedge against it.

Alternatives to FilaOps

An alternative is always an alternative for a reason. There is no universal replacement.

  • InvenTreeOpen source or self-hostable

InvenTree is MIT-licensed with no use restrictions at all, but knows nothing about printers or filament weight. You would be building the additive parts yourself.

Evidence and verification

✓ VerifiedLast checked October 9, 2026 · 84% of capability fields resolved · 100% of those carry a source

Pricing and tier split are clearly published, which is rare for a project this small. The license classification is ours, based on what BSL 1.1 permits. The MRP was checked against the six Full MRP tests using the user guide and the project's source code: dated demand, netting, open purchase orders and dated output pass, but lead-time offsetting is only partial. The user guide also says: "The full MRP run (with planned order generation) is invoked via the staff API ( POST /api/v1/mrp/run ). A UI for this workflow is planned for a future release."
