OpenBOM

by OpenBOM

BOM & inventoryProprietary SaaS✓ Verified

A cloud product-data platform connecting CAD to bills of materials, part catalogs, change management and procurement. The engineering side of the house, usually feeding an ERP rather than replacing one.

Why it is classified this way

We call this a BOM & inventory product. Tracks product structure, parts, costs, and purchasing without a complete plan-and-execute production loop.

It is not labeled Full MRP because we have not verified that it accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule; nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming; explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials; uses lead times or required dates; and produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations. That is a statement about the evidence we found, not a claim that the product is weak, see the capability table and the sources below.

The six Full MRP tests, and how OpenBOM does on each (1 of 6)
  1. YesIt represents a bill of materials, recipe, or formula.Evidence: openbom.com(opens in a new tab)
  2. PartialIt accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule. Not established. Only partly shown: the evidence covers some of this but not all of it, so the test is not established.
  3. PartialIt nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming. Not established. No evidence found yet.
  4. UnknownIt explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials. Not established. No evidence found yet.
  5. UnknownIt uses lead times or required dates. Not established. No evidence found yet.
  6. UnknownIt produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations. Not established. No evidence found yet.

These rules are applied identically to every product and enforced at build time, a record cannot be published as Full MRP unless all six pass with a source attached. Read the methodology.

Best for

  • Engineering teams whose BOM originates in CAD and needs to stay in step with it
  • Companies needing revision control and engineering change orders on product structure
  • Shops that want the BOM feeding an existing ERP rather than a second ERP

Not a fit when

  • Anyone looking for MRP. Production planning here stops at quantity gaps against stock, with no dates or lead times
  • Batch and recipe manufacturers
  • Small teams sensitive to per-seat pricing on top of CAD licenses they already pay for

Pricing detail

Professional Team is $55 per editor seat billed monthly, or $30 a month billed yearly. Company is $165 billed monthly or $90 billed yearly. This is the tier with CAD file management, revisions and change management. Enterprise custom. CAD add-ins are a further $45 per editor per month billed monthly ($25 billed yearly) per CAD system. Every plan includes 2,000 data records (the vendor says so in a 2026 video); larger record tiers are priced separately, starting at $180 a month billed monthly ($100 billed yearly) for 5,000 records. Read-only users are unlimited on paid plans, which softens the per-seat model considerably. Free plans exist only for education, personal and non-commercial use, on application; commercial use needs a paid editor seat, and read-only users are free and unlimited.

CapabilityFindingWhat we found
Accepts dated demandYou can tell it what is due and when, sales orders with dates, a forecast, or a production schedule.PartialThe 2024 production planning manual builds an Order BOM for a customer order, with a unit count ("Number of Units in Order: 20") and a description, but shows no due or required date on it. That is demand without a date, which is why this is partial. This comes from a worked example in the manual.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Nets against stock on handIt subtracts what you already have before telling you to buy more.YesThe 2024 production planning manual defines the gap: "A Quantity Gap is the difference between the quantity required for production and the quantity you currently have on hand." A 2019 blog post describes the same calculation. It shows netting against stock, not time-phased planning.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Counts incoming ordersIt knows about purchase orders and production orders already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice.UnknownNot yet researched. We would need: documentation showing open purchase or production orders included in the supply picture.Know the answer?

Produces dated buy/make suggestionsThe output is an actionable list with dates, order this much by this date, start this batch on this date.UnknownNot yet researched. We would need: documentation or a screenshot of replenishment or planning suggestions carrying dates.Know the answer?

Work / manufacturing ordersA record authorising and tracking the making of a specific quantity.PartialProduction batches, called Order BOMs, act as build orders and can be released to production. The help center notes a limit: "In the current implementation of Order BOM, only one batch (i.e. Order BOM) can be opened, meaning you cannot create a new batch (i.e. Order BOM) without releasing it (see step 6, above) or deleting a previously created batch (i.e. Order BOM)." That page dates from 2021, Order BOMs are a paid-plan feature, and there are no operations or work-in-progress tracking.Reviewed October 9, 2026. OpenBOM automatically created the vendor with the same name as in OpenBOM." A 2025 vendor preview of the Xero connector, then in testing and due in October 2025, shows the same one-way push of purchase orders ("After a few moments, we'll receive a message that the ... bike purchase order has been created in zero."), and neither video shows anything coming back from the ledger into OpenBOM.Source: openbom.com(opens in a new tab); Vendor video, 2026, at 1:57(opens in a new tab); Vendor video, 2025, at 2:35(opens in a new tab)Question this

Editorial notes and cautions

Things we would want a friend to know before buying.

  • OpenBOM typically sits upstream of a manufacturing system rather than replacing one. If you are choosing between this and an MRP product, you may need both, or neither, if your BOM already lives happily in your ERP.
  • The advertised per-seat prices are the discounted yearly rates. List prices are roughly 80% higher, and the CAD add-in is charged per seat per CAD system.
  • Metering by data records rather than users is easy to underestimate. Every unique part number, BOM line and managed CAD file is a record, so count those in your real assemblies before committing.

Evidence and verification

✓ VerifiedLast checked October 9, 2026 · 52% of capability fields resolved · 100% of those carry a source

Pricing structure and integration list are precisely sourced. The manufacturing capability fields are mostly unknown, and appropriately so. This is a PLM-adjacent product, not a manufacturing system. A 2026 vendor video explains the data-record meter: "A data record measures exactly three things." They are unique part numbers, BOM lines and managed CAD files; properties, quantities and revisions add none, and every subscription includes 2,000. Promoted to Verified on 2026-09-19: 13 of 25 fields resolved, mostly on help-center articles (orders, formulas and roll-ups, data export) rather than marketing pages, which clears every Verified rule.

What we still want to confirm

We publish our gaps rather than hiding them. If you can point us at a first-party page for any of these, we will update the record and credit the correction.

  • Check whether an Order BOM is still limited to one open batch at a time. The 2021 page still says so, but the help site's search index now titles it "How to create an Order BOM (made private)", and the 2024 production planning manual neither repeats nor retracts the limit. Needs a trial account.

Still unknown: counts incoming orders, uses lead times, produces dated buy/make suggestions, capacity planning, recipes & formulas, routings & operations, shop-floor tracking, batch & lot traceability, expiry & shelf life, ecommerce connection, webhooks, mcp support.
