Production scheduling

You need to sequence work across people and machines, and know whether the dates you are promising are achievable. This is a capacity problem rather than a material problem, and the products that are good at it are often not the same ones that are good at planning materials.

What to check before you choose

  • Is capacity finite or infinite? Infinite-capacity scheduling will happily promise you three shifts of work in one day.
  • Are setup and run times separated? Setup dominates short runs and disappears on long ones.
  • Does the schedule react to what happened on the floor, or is it a plan someone updates manually?
  • Can operators report progress without a full-price seat each?

Where people get this wrong

Treating a Gantt chart as scheduling. Drawing bars on a timeline is presentation. Scheduling is the system refusing to put two jobs on one machine at the same time.

33 products fit

Every product here has routings & operations and capacity planning recorded as Yes on first-party evidence. Best-evidenced records come first, never by price or popularity.
