Planning / APSPasses all 6 Full MRP testsOpen core✓ Verified

A dedicated planning engine, forecasting, inventory targets, and finite-material and finite-capacity production planning, designed to sit on top of the system that already holds your transactions rather than replace it.

Why it is classified this way

We call this a Planning / APS product. A forecasting, constraint-planning, or scheduling engine that normally sits on top of another system that holds your transactions.

This product meets our Full MRP tests, but we classify it by its center of gravity rather than its planning engine alone. The capability table below shows the detail.

The six Full MRP tests, and how frePPLe does on each (6 of 6)
  1. YesIt represents a bill of materials, recipe, or formula.Evidence: frepple.com › Operation materials(opens in a new tab)
  2. YesIt accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule.Evidence: frepple.com › Sales orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com(opens in a new tab)
  3. YesIt nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming.Evidence: frepple.com › Buffers(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Purchase orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Editions(opens in a new tab)
  4. YesIt explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials.Evidence: frepple.com › Features(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Operation materials(opens in a new tab)The planner consumes component material through operation materials and, per the feature list, will "Coordinate subassemblies i.e. if one of the components or subassemblies is constrained and late, the schedule of the other components are aligned to match its availability." This rests on the feature list and model reference; we have not watched a plan run.
  5. YesIt uses lead times or required dates.Evidence: frepple.com › Features(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Item suppliers(opens in a new tab)
  6. YesIt produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations.Evidence: frepple.com › Purchase orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Manufacturing orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com(opens in a new tab)

These rules are applied identically to every product and enforced at build time, a record cannot be published as Full MRP unless all six pass with a source attached. Read the methodology.

Best for

  • Shops that already run an ERP or inventory system and have outgrown its planning
  • Odoo users who want serious constrained planning without changing their transactional system
  • Planners who need what-if scenarios and finite-capacity plans rather than another place to type orders

Not a fit when

  • Anyone looking for a single system to run the whole shop. This deliberately does not hold your transactions
  • Very small makers; the complexity only pays off once planning is genuinely hard
  • Teams without an existing system to integrate it with

Pricing detail

Three editions. Community is free, open source and self-hosted. Cloud (frePPLe's servers) and Enterprise (your hardware) are closed source and now have published prices: the pricing page's calculator prices them by module (demand forecasting, inventory planning, production planning) and by the number of active item x location pairs. With production planning alone at the smallest size, under 20,000 item x locations, Cloud and Enterprise are €546 a month billed annually or €643 billed monthly, and Cloud PLUS, with double the resource allocation, is €683 billed annually. With all three modules the figure is €984. Implementation help is optional and quoted as a range: a proof of concept "Between € 2000 and € 5000" and an implementation project "Between € 5000 and € 25000". The editions page lists these as Cloud and Enterprise only: inventory planning, the interactive Gantt chart (plan editor), due date quoting, setup matrix optimization and planning with shelf life ("Consider perishable products with a limited shelf life in your plan."). Community has production planning and scheduling, forecasting, the web interface, Excel, CSV and REST API integration, what-if scenarios and the Odoo connector.

CapabilityFindingWhat we found
Accepts dated demandYou can tell it what is due and when, sales orders with dates, a forecast, or a production schedule.YesSales orders are a planning input with a due date: the reference manual lists the field "due dateTime Due date of the demand." Statistical forecasts, which the vendor markets heavily, add to that demand.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Sales orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com(opens in a new tab)Question this
Nets against stock on handIt subtracts what you already have before telling you to buy more.YesEach stock point (a buffer) carries its starting stock, "Inventory level at the start of the time horizon", and the planner covers demand from that stock and from loaded purchase orders before proposing new supply. Inventory planning, the module that sizes stock levels, is listed on the editions page as Cloud and Enterprise only.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Buffers(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Purchase orders(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Editions(opens in a new tab)Question this
Counts incoming ordersIt knows about purchase orders and production orders already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice.YesThe vendor states: "This table is populated with new proposed purchase orders when frePPLe generates a plan. It is also possible to load purchase orders that are already approved or confirmed in your ERP system." Approved or confirmed purchase orders from the ERP are loaded as input to the plan. Checked 2026-09-14.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Purchase orders(opens in a new tab)Question this
Uses lead timesIt works backwards from when you need something to when you must order or start it, using supplier and production lead times.Yes"In backward scheduling mode, the planning algorithm counts backward from the due date of the demand for a just-in-time completion of the order." Item suppliers carry a procurement lead time, so a proposed purchase order gets an ordering date ahead of its receipt date.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Features(opens in a new tab); frepple.com › Item suppliers(opens in a new tab)Question this
Produces dated buy/make suggestionsThe output is an actionable list with dates, order this much by this date, start this batch on this date.YesThe reference manual says the purchase order table "is populated with new proposed purchase orders when frePPLe generates a plan", each marked "The purchase order is proposed by frePPLe to meet the plan (optimization output)." Proposed purchase orders carry an ordering date and a receipt date, and proposed manufacturing orders carry start and end dates.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Production capabilities, with our finding and its source for each.
CapabilityFindingWhat we found
Bill of materialsA list of the parts and quantities needed to make one of something.Yes"Operation materials are used to model the consumption and production of material by operations." The manual's example has one operation consuming two of part A and one of part B to produce part C, which is a bill of materials attached to the making operation.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Operation materials(opens in a new tab)Question this
Multi-level BOMSub-assemblies inside assemblies, a part that is itself made from other parts, nested as deep as you need.YesThe feature list says the plan will "Coordinate subassemblies i.e. if one of the components or subassemblies is constrained and late, the schedule of the other components are aligned to match its availability." Subassemblies are planned as their own supply through chained operations. This rests on the feature list; we have not seen a nested BOM screen.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Work / manufacturing ordersA record authorising and tracking the making of a specific quantity.Partial"This table contains the manufacturing orders of your supply chain, either proposed by frePPLe or confirmed." These are planning records: confirmed orders normally live in your ERP and are loaded into frePPLe, so this is not where you run and close jobs. This is read from the reference manual, not seen in use.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: frepple.com › Manufacturing orders(opens in a new tab)Question this

About the licence

The license file states the software "has dual licensing. You can use the software free of charge under the MIT License. You can also purchase a commercial license from frePPLe bv for additional functionality and professional support." The free core is genuinely MIT; the Enterprise edition adds functionality that is not. That makes this open core.

Editorial notes and cautions

Things we would want a friend to know before buying.

  • This is a complement, not a replacement. The vendor positions it as adding advanced planning to an existing deployment, and buying it expecting an ERP will disappoint you.
  • Dual licensing means the free core and the paid editions are different products. Inventory planning, the plan editor Gantt chart, due date quoting, setup matrix optimization and shelf-life planning are Cloud and Enterprise only, so check your needs against that list before planning a Community deployment.
  • Several capability fields are still unknown here, and that is largely appropriate: an APS is not supposed to have lot tracking or an ecommerce connector. Judge it on the planning rows.

Evidence and verification

✓ VerifiedLast checked October 9, 2026 · 60% of capability fields resolved · 100% of those carry a source

License read directly from the repository COPYING file, which is the only place the dual-licensing arrangement is stated plainly. The vendor's own site says only "open source", which would have been misleading to repeat. Beyond Odoo, the ERP integration chapter says "As of today, connectors exist with Odoo, Openbravo, ERPNext and uzERP." and offers a generic connector skeleton for other systems. Data can also be loaded from Excel or CSV files, by direct database access, through the REST API or from the command line.
