True material requirements planning

You want to be told what to order and when, not that you are low on something today, but that you must place an order by Friday because the supplier takes twelve days and two batches start the week after. Very few products do this, regardless of how many have MRP in the name.

What to check before you choose

  • Does the output carry a date? A list of things you are short of is not a plan.
  • Does it use supplier lead time to work backwards from when you need the material?
  • Does it count purchase orders you have already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice?
  • Can you see the calculation, or does it just produce a number you have to trust?

Where people get this wrong

Reorder points look like planning and are not. A reorder point fires when stock crosses a line today. Time-phased planning looks at demand you have not filled yet, works out when you will cross that line, and tells you when to act. Most products in this market do the first thing and describe it as the second.

27 products fit

A product qualifies only by passing all six planning tests on first-party evidence, the same rule as the badge and the directory filter. Partial support does not count. This list is derived from the records, not hand-picked.
