Open-source and self-hosted MRP

You want to run it yourself, own the data outright, and never receive a per-seat invoice again. That is a genuinely good trade for some shops and a genuinely bad one for others, and the deciding factor is almost never the feature list.

What to check before you choose

  • Read the actual license, not the marketing page. Open source, open core, source available and 'free tier' are four different things.
  • If it is open core, establish precisely which features are withheld from the free edition.
  • Who will run the server, apply updates and restore the backup at 2am? That person is the real cost.
  • How active is the project? Check commit dates and issue responses, not star counts.

Where people get this wrong

Reading 'free' as 'cheap'. The license costs nothing; the implementation costs plenty. It is still often cheaper over five years than per-seat SaaS, but that comparison only works if you are honest about the second number.
