SOS Inventory
by SOS Inventory Software, LLC
Inventory and manufacturing built around QuickBooks Online, with unlimited BOM levels on every tier but work orders, work centers and process manufacturing reserved for the top plan.
Why it is classified this way
We call this a Light manufacturing product. Has bills of materials or recipes, consumes stock when you build, and tracks production, but time-phased planning is not verified.
It is not labeled Full MRP because we have not verified that it nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming; explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials; uses lead times or required dates; and produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations. That is a statement about the evidence we found, not a claim that the product is weak, see the capability table and the sources below.
The six Full MRP tests, and how SOS Inventory does on each (2 of 6)
- YesIt represents a bill of materials, recipe, or formula.Evidence: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)
- YesIt accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule.Evidence: developer.sosinventory.com › SalesOrder(opens in a new tab)
- PartialIt nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming. Not established. Only partly shown: the evidence covers some of this but not all of it, so the test is not established.
- UnknownIt explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials. Not established. No evidence found yet.
- PartialIt uses lead times or required dates. Not established. Only partly shown: the evidence covers some of this but not all of it, so the test is not established.
- UnknownIt produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations. Not established. No evidence found yet.
These rules are applied identically to every product and enforced at build time, a record cannot be published as Full MRP unless all six pass with a source attached. Read the methodology.
Best for
- Shops already committed to QuickBooks Online that want manufacturing beside it
- Manufacturers needing deeply nested BOMs without paying extra for depth
- Process and variable-yield producers, which few products in this price bracket handle
Not a fit when
- Anyone wanting work orders on the entry plan, they are Pro-only
- Shops moving away from QuickBooks rather than towards it
- Buyers needing planning; nothing time-phased is documented

Pricing detail
Companion $69.95/month (2 users), Plus $139.95/month (3 users), Pro $194.95/month (5 users). Additional users are a flat $25 each on every tier, which is refreshingly simple. Unlimited BOM levels on all tiers. Serial and lot numbers start at Plus. The Pro tier is where manufacturing really lives: work orders, work centers, WIP, process manufacturing, variable-yield manufacturing, labour tracking and overhead. External connections cost $25 a month each; the pricing FAQ does not say whether an API connection counts as one.

Manufacturing capability
19 of 25 fields resolved. "Unknown" means we have not found first-party evidence. It is not a No.
Planning
Working out what to buy or make, and when.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Accepts dated demandYou can tell it what is due and when, sales orders with dates, a forecast, or a production schedule. | Yes | Sales order lines carry a due date, which the API reference describes as "The due date for this line." This is an API field; we have not seen reordering or planning use it.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: developer.sosinventory.com › SalesOrder(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Nets against stock on handIt subtracts what you already have before telling you to buy more. | Partial | The Reorder report nets unfulfilled sales, and optionally open work orders, against stock: "The system will suggest a reorder quantity that will increase your in-stock quantity of items to the maximum stock level after all unfulfilled sales and open work orders are satisfied." It is triggered by a reorder point and fills to a maximum level, so it is not a time-phased requirements calculation.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: help.sosinventory.com › V8 reordering and the reorder list(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Counts incoming ordersIt knows about purchase orders and production orders already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice. | Partial | Items track stock on open purchase orders and work orders. The API reference describes the purchase order field as "Quantity of this item on currently open purchase orders." The Reorder report counts that incoming stock: "Items will appear on the Reorder report when the available quantity of an item, plus the quantity of the item on open (unreceived) purchases orders, hits or falls below the reorder point." It can also count open work orders. This is reorder-point logic, not a dated plan, so expected receipt dates do not shift anything.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: help.sosinventory.com › V8 reordering and the reorder list(opens in a new tab); developer.sosinventory.com › Item(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Uses lead timesIt works backwards from when you need something to when you must order or start it, using supplier and production lead times. | Partial | Items have a lead time field, which the API reference describes as "Lead time (in days) to receive this product after ordering it." Reorder suggestions carry no dates, so lead time does not move an order date. On the Pro plan it is one input when reorder points are calculated automatically from history, alongside past sales volumes.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Produces dated buy/make suggestionsThe output is an actionable list with dates, order this much by this date, start this batch on this date. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: documentation or a screenshot of replenishment or planning suggestions carrying dates.Know the answer? |
| Capacity planningChecks whether your people and machines can do the work in the time available. | Partial | Work centers are on the Pro tier, but they are stages for work in progress rather than capacity: "work centers allow you to organize work-in-progress (WIP) manufacturing into stages." Each carries an asset account for moving builds through stages and reporting by stage. No hours, load or capacity fields are described.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Production
Recipes, bills of materials, and running the work.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Bill of materialsA list of the parts and quantities needed to make one of something. | Yes | Assemblies with bills of materials on every tier.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Multi-level BOMSub-assemblies inside assemblies, a part that is itself made from other parts, nested as deep as you need. | Yes | "BOM Levels: Unlimited" across all three tiers, genuinely unusual, since most competitors gate nesting behind an upgrade.Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Recipes & formulasBatch-style production by weight, volume, or percentage, including scaling a batch up or down. | Partial | Process manufacturing and variable-yield manufacturing are listed on the Pro tier, which is the vocabulary of recipe-based production. We have not verified a formula object with batch scaling.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Work / manufacturing ordersA record authorising and tracking the making of a specific quantity. | Yes | Work orders and work-in-progress are Pro-tier features, not available on Companion or Plus.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Routings & operationsThe ordered steps a product goes through, and which machine or station does each one. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: documentation of operation sequences or routings attached to production.Know the answer? |
| Shop-floor trackingOperators report progress, time, and completions as the work happens. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: documentation of a shop-floor, operator, or terminal interface for reporting production.Know the answer? |
| Quality controlsChecks, tests, holds, and non-conformance records tied to production or receiving. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: documentation of quality inspections, checks, or non-conformance handling.Know the answer? |
Inventory & traceability
Knowing what you hold and being able to trace it.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Batch & lot traceabilityWhich incoming material lots went into which finished batch, and where those finished goods went. | Yes | Lot numbers start at the Plus tier; the Companion plan has neither lots nor serials.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Expiry & shelf lifeBest-before dates on materials and finished goods, with warnings before they lapse. | Yes | Lots carry expiry dates, and the API reference describes the build-line field as "The date this lot expires." Lots can also be flagged expired or recalled. Lots start at the Plus tier.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: developer.sosinventory.com › Build(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Serial numbersUnique identifiers on individual units, for warranty or field service. | Yes | Serial numbers start at the Plus tier.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
Commerce & accounting
Costs, purchasing, storefronts, and the books.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |

| Product costing & COGSWhat it costs you to make one, and the cost of the goods you sold. | Yes | Job costing, labour tracking and overhead are Pro-tier features.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: sosinventory.com › Pricing(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| PurchasingRaising and tracking purchase orders to suppliers from inside the system. | Yes | The vendor states: "Go to Operations menu > Purchasing > Purchase orders, then select Add new." | Accounting connectionSends financial data to bookkeeping software, or includes its own general ledger. | Yes | The product is built around QuickBooks Online integration, and every plan is described as an extension for QuickBooks Online users. The help center says what happens without a connection: "If a connection is not active, the sync functions will not be available to you." That describes losing sync, not the app stopping, so no page settles whether SOS can run without QuickBooks. Treat it as expected and ask on a call.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Ecommerce connectionPulls orders and pushes stock levels to a storefront or marketplace. | Yes | Items can sync back to Shopify and BigCommerce. The API reference describes one item field as "True if item updates should be synced back to Shopify, if the account is connected to Shopify." How deep the store connections go is not described there.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: developer.sosinventory.com › Item(opens in a new tab)Question this |
Openness & your data
Getting data in, out, and away if you leave.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| APIA documented programming interface so other software can read and write your data. | Yes | SOS publishes a REST API (v2) covering items, sales orders, purchase orders, work orders, builds, lots and serials. The help center describes it as open to customers with no plan restriction: "SOS Inventory has a standard REST API structure available to customers, providing you with the capability to access your accounts data through web requests." The pricing FAQ charges $25 a month per external connection and does not say whether an API connection counts as one.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: help.sosinventory.com › V8 api(opens in a new tab); developer.sosinventory.com › Overview(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| WebhooksThe system can notify other software the moment something changes. | Partial | There is a single webhook, for stock quantity changes: "Currently, SOS Inventory supports one webhook in our API, which was added to support our integration with Zapier." Nothing else can be pushed out automatically.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: help.sosinventory.com › Configuring an api webhook(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| MCP supportA Model Context Protocol server, letting an AI assistant read or act on this data. Useful, but it has nothing to do with whether the product plans materials. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: a first-party mcp server, or documentation of one.Know the answer? |
| CSV exportYou can get your lists out as spreadsheet files. | Yes | In a 2023 vendor tutorial on bulk-editing bills of materials, the file comes out of the Company menu: "when you are ready to download the data file go to the Company menu and select export data". The video exports BOMs to a spreadsheet file; we have not checked which other record types the same menu covers.Source: Vendor video, 2023, at 2:53(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Full data exportYou can take everything, including history and relationships, not just a few screens' worth of rows. | Unknown | Not yet researched. We would need: documentation of a complete account export, database dump, or equivalent.Know the answer? |

Editorial notes and cautions
Things we would want a friend to know before buying.
- Unlimited BOM levels on the $69.95 tier is a genuine outlier in this market and worth noting even though work orders are not.
- Variable-yield manufacturing is a real batch-producer feature that most competitors at this price simply do not offer. If your yields move run to run, that is a strong reason to look here.
- Every plan is described as an extension for QuickBooks Online, and no vendor page says whether SOS can run without it. Assume you will pay for a QuickBooks Online subscription on top, and confirm on a call.
Alternatives to SOS Inventory
An alternative is always an alternative for a reason. There is no universal replacement.
Compared on HandiFox's page, where we wrote: "SOS Inventory is another QuickBooks Online add-on, with unlimited BOM levels on every tier and work orders on its top plan."
Both gate manufacturing behind an upgrade. SOS keeps additional users at a flat $25 where inFlow charges $29 to $59 and caps order volume, so neither is cheaper for every team; price your own headcount on both.
Evidence and verification
The pricing page carries a detailed feature matrix, which is the source for both price and capability gating here. API, due date, lead time, expiry and store-sync fields come from the developer reference at developer.sosinventory.com, which only renders in a browser. QuickBooks, work center, API access, reorder and webhook details come from the vendor's help center.

What we still want to confirm
We publish our gaps rather than hiding them. If you can point us at a first-party page for any of these, we will update the record and credit the correction.
- Confirm whether QuickBooks Online is a hard requirement. The help center says only that sync stops without an active connection, not whether the app keeps working; ask the vendor on a call.
- Confirm whether API access counts as a $25-a-month external connection. The help center offers the API to customers with no plan restriction, but the pricing FAQ does not say how API connections are charged.
Still unknown: produces dated buy/make suggestions, routings & operations, shop-floor tracking, quality controls, mcp support, full data export.
