Ardent Seller
by Ardent Workshop LLC
Inventory, recipes and production for makers and small food sellers. Recipes with subassemblies and steps drive production runs that consume ingredients at weighted-average cost, lots trace forward and back, and sales history feeds dated restock suggestions. Etsy, Shopify and Square connect, and every feature is on every plan, including a free one.
Why it is classified this way
We call this a Light manufacturing product. Has bills of materials or recipes, consumes stock when you build, and tracks production, but time-phased planning is not verified.
It is not labeled Full MRP because we have not verified that it accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule. That is a statement about the evidence we found, not a claim that the product is weak, see the capability table and the sources below.
The six Full MRP tests, and how Ardent Seller does on each (5 of 6)
- YesIt represents a bill of materials, recipe, or formula.Evidence: ardentseller.app › Create(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › How stock moves(opens in a new tab)
- PartialIt accepts dated demand, sales orders, a forecast, or a master production schedule. Not established. Only partly shown: the evidence covers some of this but not all of it, so the test is not established.
- YesIt nets that demand against stock on hand and orders already incoming.Evidence: ardentseller.app › Smart restock(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › Measure(opens in a new tab)
- YesIt explodes requirements through at least one level of the bill of materials.Evidence: ardentseller.app › Measure(opens in a new tab)Season Readiness "Explodes the plan through your recipes into a material shopping list — required quantity, on hand, on order, shortfall, and estimated cost". Ingredients made in-house are flagged rather than exploded further.
- YesIt uses lead times or required dates.Evidence: ardentseller.app › Smart restock(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › Measure(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › Source(opens in a new tab)
- YesIt produces dated buy, make, transfer, release, or reschedule recommendations.Evidence: ardentseller.app › Smart restock(opens in a new tab)
These rules are applied identically to every product and enforced at build time, a record cannot be published as Full MRP unless all six pass with a source attached. Read the methodology.
Best for
- Makers who want recipes, subassemblies and batch records on a free plan before paying anything
- Etsy, Shopify and Square sellers who want order-by dates for restocking based on their own sales history
- Seasonal sellers who would rather pay per transaction in busy months than a fixed monthly fee
Not a fit when
- Anyone who needs to sync with QuickBooks or Xero, or build on an API; all are still on the roadmap
- Shops that need expiry alerts or first-expired-first-out picking; expiry is a date field on purchases
- Planning from firm customer orders with due dates; demand comes from last season's sales, not from orders you enter

Planning
Working out what to buy or make, and when.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Accepts dated demandYou can tell it what is due and when, sales orders with dates, a forecast, or a production schedule. | Partial | Demand is projected from your own sales history, not entered. Season Readiness projects each product's demand for a chosen season window from the same window last year, and the vendor is careful to say "The projection is deterministic — last season × your growth number, not a forecast". Smart Restock reads completed sales month by month. Production runs carry a scheduled date, but no page says scheduled runs or open sales orders feed either calculation.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Nets against stock on handIt subtracts what you already have before telling you to buy more. | Yes | Smart Restock recommends a quantity "minus what you already have on hand and what's already on order in open purchases", and Season Readiness "nets out what you already have on hand".Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Smart restock(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › Measure(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Counts incoming ordersIt knows about purchase orders and production orders already placed, so it does not tell you to order twice. | Yes | Open purchases count as supply: the recommended quantity deducts what is on order, "so it never tells you to reorder something that's on the truck." Season Readiness shows an on-order column per material. Open production runs are not said to count.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Smart restock(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › Measure(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Uses lead timesIt works backwards from when you need something to when you must order or start it, using supplier and production lead times. | Yes | Vendor lead times set the order date. Smart Restock's "Order by [date]" status means "The date is the last day you can order and still receive stock before it runs low." In Season Readiness, "Order-by dates work back from the season start using each material’s vendor lead time". Items can override the vendor's default lead time.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Produces dated buy/make suggestionsThe output is an actionable list with dates, order this much by this date, start this batch on this date. | Yes | Smart Restock is described as "What to reorder, how much, and by when", and the planner screen's caption says "every row shows what to order, how much, by when, and why." It recommends only; it never creates the purchase. The planner sits in the Advanced inventory ops module, which has to be switched on.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Production
Recipes, bills of materials, and running the work.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Bill of materialsA list of the parts and quantities needed to make one of something. | Yes | "Build recipes that list ingredient quantities and steps, then run a production batch to consume the raw materials and add the produced item to inventory at rolled-up cost."Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Create(opens in a new tab); ardentseller.app › How stock moves(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Multi-level BOMSub-assemblies inside assemblies, a part that is itself made from other parts, nested as deep as you need. | Yes | Subassemblies are made by their own recipes and used in others: "Subassemblies are intermediate items that you produce and then use as components in other recipes or products." No depth limit is stated for recipes; the What Can I Make report looks one level deep.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Create(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Recipes & formulasBatch-style production by weight, volume, or percentage, including scaling a batch up or down. | Yes | Recipes scale per run with Recipe Scale, a "Multiplier that resizes a single batch (e.g., 2x doubles all ingredient amounts and the yield per batch)." Batch Quantity repeats the recipe, and unit conversions let you buy in pounds and use in cups or grams.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Create(opens in a new tab)Question this |
| Work / manufacturing ordersA record authorising and tracking the making of a specific quantity. | Yes | Production runs are records with a status: "Scheduled, In Progress, Completed, or Canceled. New runs start as Scheduled. Only completed runs affect inventory." Each run gets a batch number in the format PRD-YYMMDD-XXXX.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Routings & operationsThe ordered steps a product goes through, and which machine or station does each one. | Partial | Recipes carry numbered steps with an optional duration and an optional labor item whose cost is included, and equipment can be assigned with usage hours. There are no work centers or machine routings.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Source: ardentseller.app › Create(opens in a new tab)Question this |

Inventory & traceability
Knowing what you hold and being able to trace it.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Batch & lot traceabilityWhich incoming material lots went into which finished batch, and where those finished goods went. | Yes | Purchases record supplier lot numbers and production runs get batch numbers. The create guide says "Individual ingredients can also carry their own batch/lot numbers for traceability. This chain of batch numbers enables full forward and backward traceability in the Traceability Report." The report is described as "Trace ingredients from purchase through production to sale."Reviewed October 9, 2026. | Expiry & shelf lifeBest-before dates on materials and finished goods, with warnings before they lapse. | Yes | Each purchase line can carry an "optional batch/lot number, brand name, country of origin, and expiration date". No expiry alerts or first-expired-first-out picking are documented; expired stock is written off as waste.Reviewed October 9, 2026. Commerce & accounting
Costs, purchasing, storefronts, and the books.
| Capability | Finding | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Product costing & COGSWhat it costs you to make one, and the cost of the goods you sold. | Yes | Weighted-average costing throughout, including labor on recipe steps. The costing guide rules out FIFO and LIFO for "just one honest blended number per item, per location." Production transactions carry the rolled-up cost into cost of goods sold.Reviewed October 9, 2026. | PurchasingRaising and tracking purchase orders to suppliers from inside the system. | Yes | Purchases are recorded with lines, lots and costs, and the app generates a "PDF purchase order for any purchase transaction" with the vendor's address and a PO number.Reviewed October 9, 2026. On the vendor's roadmap
The vendor's own account of what is coming, dated. A plan changes nothing in the table above, which records what we saw working.
- The public roadmap lists QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations, REST API access with webhooks, and an MCP connector for AI assistants, each marked "Considering". No dates are given; the date here is when we read the page. Vendor statement, October 9, 2026.

Editorial notes and cautions
Things we would want a friend to know before buying.
- Paid plans are metered in transactions, and a production run counts at least twice, once for the output and once for the ingredients used. Estimate your monthly purchases, sales and runs before choosing a plan.
- The planning features work from sales history. Season Readiness is the closest thing here to material requirements planning: it explodes last season's sales through your recipes and dates each material order by its lead time. Because demand is projected, not entered, it does not pass our dated-demand test.
- There is no accounting connector and no API yet. QuickBooks, Xero, API access and an MCP server are all on the roadmap marked "Considering".
Alternatives to Ardent Seller
An alternative is always an alternative for a reason. There is no universal replacement.
Stocksmith adds a QuickBooks connection, Faire and Amazon channels and documented expiry handling on lots, at a far higher entry price: lot tracking starts at $99 a month.
- InventoraBetter commerce & accounting connection
Inventora already syncs with QuickBooks and Zoho Books, publishes a REST API and connects more storefronts; Ardent Seller has a free plan and dated restock suggestions that Inventora does not document.
- MRPeasyStronger true MRP
MRPeasy plans from dated sales orders and forecasts you enter, where Ardent Seller projects demand from last season's sales; MRPeasy costs more and is billed per user.
Evidence and verification
Why this record is not Verified. Two open questions decide how the planning claims read: whether scheduled production runs or sales orders count as demand, and whether restock suggestions cover raw materials. Nobody has used the app, so it stays Partially verified until a trial or a documentation page answers them.
Ardent Seller publishes a full documentation site, read on 2026-10-09 as server-rendered HTML. Its planning features come close to our Full MRP tests: Season Readiness nets projected demand against stock and open purchases, explodes it through recipes and dates each material order by vendor lead time. It fails only the dated-demand test, because demand is projected from the same window last year rather than entered as orders or a forecast, and the vendor itself says it is "not a forecast". Smart Restock dates reorders per item from sales history, and no page says it covers ingredients that are consumed rather than sold. The class stays Light manufacturing.

What we still want to confirm
We publish our gaps rather than hiding them. If you can point us at a first-party page for any of these, we will update the record and credit the correction.
- Confirm whether scheduled production runs or open sales orders count as demand in Smart Restock or Season Readiness. If they do, the record would pass all six Full MRP tests.
- Confirm whether Smart Restock covers raw materials, which are consumed by production rather than sold, or only items with sales history.
- Confirm whether expiry dates on purchased lots carry through to production batches and trigger any warning.
- Confirm serial number support and any quality-check records. Neither is mentioned in the documentation.
- Watch the roadmap for QuickBooks, Xero, API access and MCP to ship.
Still unknown: capacity planning, shop-floor tracking, quality controls, serial numbers.
